Tips for finding the best pages to get links from.
Posted Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006. Filed under Google, Internet Marketing Tips, Link Building.
I was training my link team yesterday and gave them a nice tip. If you want a link from Site A to your Site B, which page on Site A should you ask for? I like getting links from subpages rather than homepages, since links off a homepage tend to look like ads rather than counting as an in-content link.
There are two main types of pages to seek. The first is the page most relevant to what you're seeking a link to, found by searching Google for [site:theirsite.com keyword phrase]. The second is the page with the most "power," found by searching Yahoo for [site:theirsite.com], since Yahoo tends to list a site's pages in order of importance.
For example, one of my link team members was seeking an ad from a music site and found that the most powerful page on the site, even more powerful than the homepage, was a subpage about a 2005 contest with backlinks from 4 .edu's. We asked for our ad on both the relevant page and the contest page as a "throw in," and got both.
To recap: skip the homepage when asking for links, aim for the most relevant page via Google's site: search, and aim for the most trusted, powerful page via Yahoo's site: search. This is stuff you have to do by hand — forget automating link building, and keep it under the radar.

Hello Jim,

I believe the discussion is worth bring to the attention of the community as there are rather different views on the value of linking. I have had very positive results and relate very well with what you are saying.

What is the tipical fee paid for this type of advertizing. I know it does depend on the site, but what are some good guidlines.
Hope you don’t mind answering this.

Fees can range from Free….to $5 to $1000….sometimes that’s a one time fee…sometimes that’s a yearly fee…sometimes that’s a monthly fee.
The trick is to buy as much value for what you’re willing to spend.

Jim, Another question!
When placing your ad (Content) on someones web page, do you have a minimum amount of words that you need.
For example: Say i have found a pge that has has links form other sites and seems like a good pick to do the content advertising.
Should i have a minimum of 20, 30, 50 … words in my ad for it to be most effective. I’m sure the more the better, but I would also assume 10 words wold not be any better than just a link. Or am i over analizing this whole thing.:)

Hello Jim,
Too bad you are booked, as I wanted to use your services to find good links for few domains. Could you recommend someone, who you recognize as professional?
I have also a question: If I will buy content link (in-text) does it mean that hyperlinked text should contain keywords I seek high ranking for? It is hard in my situation since my keywords are very niche (name of a person) and there is no such word in texts on other web pages. What to do then?
Cheers!
Alex
