Cool post as always Jim, funny coincidence, I passed by Troy on my way to Syracuse the weekend before last, going to the New York State Fair to see Ween and the Flaming Lips, two of my favorite bands. It was a great time, Flaming Lips are definitely something to check out, they have a really positive vibe which a lot of newer music doesn't have.

Other than that, I love the Dead, got to see them in Albany in 95, a few months before Jerry died. When I'm doing SEO I usually listen to Black Flag, Rachmaninoff, Garcia and Grisman, Funkadelic, MC Chris, Johnny Thunders, blah blah, the list goes on and on and on and on :)

I like a lot of different kinds of music. In the past I mostly like the Jam Bands like the Grateful Dead, Phish, Widespread Panic, Dave Mathews Band, etc, and a lot of the usual classic rock from the 70’s but I’m starting to listen to a lot more Hawaiian Music lately.

Jake Shimabukuro is one of my favorites. The Jake is a Ukulele virtuoso! Check out the video, the guy is truly amazing.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1352016870638076087&q=ukulele&hl=en

I also like Hawaiian Exotica Music. This is the cheesy, exotic sounding, Hawaiian Lounge Music that was created in the late fifties. Instead of Ukuleles and steal guitars, they used marimbas pianos, organs, flutes and lots of percussion to create an over-the-top tropical jazz sound.

My favorite Hawaiian Exotica Group is Don Tiki. Check out the GREAT videos on the website. http://www.dontiki.com/tv.html

The other kind of Hawaiian music I like is a form of local guitar called “Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar” which is truly one of the great acoustic guitar traditions in the world. It’s a finger picked Guitar style where they play both the bass and melody at the same time.

Paul Togioka is one of my favorites. You can listen to music samples here.

It’s almost impossible to be in a bad mood when you listen to this type of Hawaiian Music. Enjoy!

Aloha,
Dave.

I've been a HUGE fan since his early recordings with the accordian made in the college restroom for it's "accoustics" played on Dr. D and have all the CD's ;)

If you go to his site you can also find links to download a song that WON'T be on the new album called "YOU'RE PITIFUL!" or see the new video "Don't Download This Song".

http://www.weirdal.com/

FWIW, I'll reserve judgement until I hear the new album but Poodle Hat was his best ever, pure genius. The song Bob spoofing good only mumble bum Bob Dylan was nothing but palindromes and one of the single most clever songs I think I've ever heard.

Then again, my wife listened to Poodle Hat and concluded I was a genius in France LMAO!
