2 New SEO Tools - Link Value and Spam Value.

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

I’m a bit late to the gun on mentioning Patricks new Text Link Value Calculator Tool.

I ran it about 25 times….from what I found, the lower price link values seemed very "fair" (between $6/month and $60 month)….but some links were valued at like $650/month…and those seemed way high…We ran this through some of the paid advertising we had for clients, and anything over $100 was flagged for me, where I lowered the value….but overall, I’d grade it a "A" for the values under $100 that it shows…but for values over $100 (something skews some way too high) they need to be "hand" looked at. Thanks Patrick!

The other tool I found through Barry as SEW, it’s called the Search Engine SPAM Detector tool.

I ran a handful of sites through it…and on some I found "Doorway Farms"….hey….I think it’s legit content and not a "doorway farm"….but I can see the "point" (a bunch of links together with keywords in url matching keyword text)….hum…wonder if google thinks this too…something to think about.

I got a kick out of running www.msn.com through the tool…..they using a bunch of hidden text?

I removed the post about the guy who stole my content.

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

I removed the post about the guy who "stole my content".

He emailed me and said it was someone else who had done it, to try to discredit his name.

I found this site through an email I had received…but it may have come from the person who might have been trying to discredit the person I mentioned.

Because I don’t know who is telling the truth, and the person in question did respond to me, I decided to remove that post. I don’t know who was in the right (including myself), so I felt best to at least remove my post since the site was taken down anyways.

Agree?

My battle with Comment Spam, and my latest solution.

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

People trying to comment spam on my blog.

…..Can’t you comment spammers work harder to identify blogs that aren’t being used to spam on instead of active blogs? Ya know, I actually read every comment that is posted (or tries to get posted).

If someone really wants a link, I’ve made it pretty easy to give you a link…I mean I’ve got the old "introduce yourself" page (link at the top of every page)….I’ve had plenty of other opportunities like the "how do I help my teething baby" or "SEO recipes" where any human can easily post something of some intelligence and get their link to boot….

It’s the ones I get with the name of "Online Gambling" with a comment of "Gambling Online widgets for green phrase random for the Great Site bla" crap one that I get that really annoy me.

A few weeks ago I was getting hammered with spam so I made people register in order to comment….and it was no surprise that my comments went down. I then got another round of major spam since someone was able to bypass the registering and was trying to post over 300 comments each day…..none went through because they also included a link in their comment, and any comment that has a link in it has to be approved by me before it goes live….also I’ve got a filter with all the special words that if a comment includes any of those words, it has to be approved by me first (gambling, debt, insurance, sex, etc)….so nothing went through….but it was a bitch to delete these every day (and how were they getting through when they weren’t registered??)

My solution: I removed the ability to post comments or trackbacks on post that are over 2 weeks old….that was where 98% of the comment spam was going….so I figure that 95% of comments or trackbacks will happen within the first 2 weeks of a post, so that should remove 98% of the comment spam. I then removed the option for people to have to be "signed in" to post to make it easier to post, but after 2 or 3 weeks I stop the ability to comment on a post.

That’s what I did….good idea? How would you have done it?

SEO Questions I hate answering.

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

Questions I hate getting:

Today I got an email with this question:

“for the investment, what kind of return can we expect?”

my answer: “I have no idea”

Here’s some other questions I hate getting:

What Pagerank should I expect?

A common answer: I don’t know….it doesn’t matter anyways. What’s the PR of the top 10 sites for the phrases you’re targeting? I’d hope you’d be somewhere in that range.

How many links each month will you get for me?

A common answer: As many as we can get for the time you’re paying us for. This is done by hand, there is no button pushing. It’s not a numbers game anyways, it’s a qualty game. If you’re focused on numbers, we’re not the company for you.

Can I spend a smaller amount now, and when I start making a lot of money I’ll raise my budget?

A common answer “If you start low you might never get anywhere….and then you’ll never have the money to pay us more”.

How about instead of paying you, I give you a percentage of my business?

A common answer: I have to pay employees and I have a wife and child to feed.  Credit is not an option.  If you make millions you won’t have to share any percentage with me, just keep paying my monthly bill.

How long will it take to be in the top 10?

I don’t know. Have you looked at this tool yet?  How old is your site compared to the top 10 sites? How many backlinks do you have compared to them? How is their quality of backlinks compared to yours? What the history of people linking to you (what words have people been using to link to your site?) How good of a resource is your site? Can you site attract natural backlinks or are you 100% relying on your SEO for backlinks? How much unique content do you have? Do we have to pay everyone to link to you, or do you have a “natural” reason why people might link to you? Keep looking at that tool with the phrases you’re targeting, and keep asking yourself these questions. An SEO is only part of your solution - how much are you helping?

How would you respond to these questions? What questions do you hate getting?
PS…I’m a bit tired and maybe a bit cranky….so maybe my responses at this moment are a bit more “bitter” than they normally are. I’m usually a bit “nicer” with how I respond.
