What’s Jim up to? I’m Feeling Lucky.

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

I haven’t been blogging much….sorry……ya know, I’m totally down with staying under the radar. There’s enough other people keeping each other in check that I’m fine with sitting back and watching the games being played. I’m fine with reacting internally to what goes on out there, and not being a part of the conversation these days.

But hey, I thought I’d give a brief update on what Jim’s been up to, or what’s on my mind at the moment.

So what’s Jim been up to?

Well, besides Internet Marketing Ninjas and SEO Class (first one April 11th)…as far as We Build Pages stuff…

We still take on the occasional client….but at least we’re able to "cherry pick" leads to match our open time slots.

We continue to improve our methods all the time via people, knowledge, tools, and the build up of the Ninja Army at We Build Pages.

We’ll soon be cycling in some of our own sites into our work mix …just as if they were a client.

…I’ve seen a lot of website business plans since I started over 9 years ago, and I’m out to follow the money.

We still continue to find amazing trusted old websites.

The trick is how to preserve the content and trust, and build upon it so that it makes a profit.  That’s a challenge in itself.

We strive to preserve the content, and add more resources to it. We’ve been working on widgets, and "long-term linkbait" content/stats, and we’re starting to spread the word on other related webpages ( ;) ).

I’ve been studying up on companies who offer good lead programs (I’m open to suggestions, fyi, we’ve got an inventory of just about every type of site/industry).

I’ve been reading/re-reading/analyzing documents that tell what a human might think when they view your webpage, and how they may judge your page, so that we can build the type of quality resource search engines might be looking for.

We’re working on doubling our staff this year (from 25 to 50), so lots of interviews/training going on.

We still building internal tools to make our jobs easier - while still keeping a human touch where it needs to be.

I lost 10 pounds in the SEO’s Fight Fat contest.

The entire team is going to Atlantic City tomorrow and monday - nicely fully paid for by one of our happy clients.

I’m going to Amsterdam in 3 weeks to visit a client. I hear the coffee is really good over there.

FYI, I’ve turned down all speaking gigs this year (except SEO Class)….I’m happy to stay under the radar and just do my thing now.

I owe Mr Wall a favor, and next to my Internet marketing training program I’ll mention his SEO training, and my SEO Class. (buy them all  ;) )

Did I mention that SEO Class is April 11th in Troy NY?

How’s everyone out there doing?

I’m Feeling Lucky.

The Birds and the Bees - Internet Love Version.

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

This is one of those emails that gets passed around and around….but I actually found a touch funny….thought you might too.

…………………………………………..

A little boy goes to his father and asks ‘Daddy, how was I born?’

The father answers, ‘Well, son, I guess one day you will need to find out anyway! Your Mom and I first got together in a chat room on Yahoo. Then I set up a date via e -mail with your Mom and we met at a cyber-cafe. We sneaked into a secluded room, where your mother agreed to a download from my hard drive. As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall, and since it was too late to hit the delete button, nine months later a little Pop-Up appeared that said:

Scroll down…You’ll love this …

The Linker - done to The Gambler

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

The Linker - a spin-off of "The Gambler" (Kenny Rogers).

On a cold winters evenin at a Pubcon in Vegas,
I met up with the Linker; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we sat at a poker table, at the Wynn there in Vegas
and as he gathered a pile of chips, he began to speak.

He said, son, I’ve made a life out of linking peoples websites,
And by knowing what the links are worth for the links that I might get.
So if you don’t mind my sayin, I can see you’re short on rankings
For a taste of your jack and coke, I’ll give you some advice.

So I handed him my drink and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he lit a cigarette and asked me for an ashtray.
And the table got really quiet, and his face got a happy go lucky expression.
Said, if youre gonna link in this game, boy, ya gotta learn to link ‘em right.

You got to know when to link em, know when to bait em,
Know when Matt’s talking FUD, and know when he’s got a gun.
You never count your backlinks or get hung up on Pagerank.
There’ll be time enough for countin when you’re number 1.

Now every linker knows that the secret to survivin
Is knowin not to piss off Google, so your rankings you can keep.
Cause some links can be winners, but the majority they are loosers.
And the best that you can hope for is ranking #1 even while you sleep.

So when he finished speakin, he turned back towards the table,
Crushed out his cigarette and headed to his suite.
And later in my hotel room, I thought about his strategies
And then I knew in my head, the links that I could reap.

You got to know when to link em, know when to bait em,
Know when Matt’s talking FUD, and know when he’s got a gun.
You never count your backlinks or get hung up on Pagerank.
There’ll be time enough for countin when you’re number 1.

You got to know when to link em, know when to bait em,
Know when Matt’s talking FUD, And when he’s holding a gun.
You never count your backlinks or get hung up on Pagerank.
There’ll be time enough for countin when you’re number 1.

Hope ya enjoyed. Feel Free to give it a Sphinn.

Here’s some other SEO Songs I’ve written: Linking Dirty (Blackhat and Dirty) - Don’t Show your Sites to Matt and even some We Build Pages theme songs.

Next week I’ll be doing a video about the "Ranking 6" phenomenon you’ve probably heard about. I’ll probably put a 5 minute teaser here on the blog, and put the full video analysis with my recommendations into the Internet Marketing Ninja Program.

I’m Feeling Lucky,
Jim

Non SEO: Feed the Homeless in Orlando Florida and go to Jail!

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

I was reviewing the news on Digg today, when I came accros an article about how a guy was arrested for feeding the homeless in Orlando.

This has to rate as one of the dumbest laws I’ve ever seen. The government and the police gotta have better things to do than to arrest people for feeding the homeless.

A few months ago I gave food to lots of homeless people in San Francisco…and never even would have thought that something like that would be against the law…I don’t want to get all political on ya, but I’ll say that I agree with most of the comments I see on Digg about that story.

rrrrrrrr…….

Cat Post 2: Giving Back to San Francisco. Giving Food to Homeless.

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

My plane was leaving on Friday morning from San Jose to Albany New York, and it looked like I’d have time Thursday to go to San Francisco for a trip. I had felt only slightly "robbed" of missing Kings Canyon (at least that’s how I justified a second "side trip" in my mind) and the Haight-Ashbury district seemed to be calling me. It’s been probably 3 years since I’ve been there, and 12 years since I was hanging out on the streets there collecting foodstamps from San Francisco, and it seemed high time to give some back.

That morning I walked through San Jose to a store and I bought a backpack full of bags of peanuts, granola, and nut mixes.

I then rented the smallest car I could get (san fran has small parking spaces) and headed to the Haight Ashbury District. There’s pleanty of homeless people around there. At one time in my life I knew the people there, and was more on their level.  I got lucky and have gone a long ways, but many of these people do not have the opportunites I’ve been lucky eneough to have.

I then walked around and talked to all the homeless people I could find. I also gave them bags of food. When my backpack ran out I picked up another backpack bag full of food and gave almost all those away as well. I also had some very interesting mind provoking conversations with many of these people. I believe they were all thankful for the food, and thankful that someone would talk with them. I could tell you stories….but that’d be another post (would love to write book on interviews with people on the streets)….

I also got a tarot reading from someone on the streets, and halfway through got a tattoo as well (I have the eye of Horus on my arm….but the original guy made the inner eye red…and I just wanted it black (red seemed evil…and I didn’t want red)…..So since I was having him make a red dot, to black I suddenly had another black dot idea…..so on my other arm I got another tattoo of the constellation Orion….only the dots for stars (about 20 dots) like this (but with no lines)…..I guess at first glance you’d think I’ve got a bunch of birth marks on my upper arm! (Why Orion?….I’m not positive….for some reason that’s always been my favorite constellation….I’m drawn to it….now it’s drawn on me ; ). It also seemed like Haight Ashbury would be a great place to get a Tattoo.

I’ll admit that I gave some people some money too….my first thought was "food" but to some, money can be an opportunity too.  And by the way, yes, I felt safe. I had friends all around….they were probably calling me the "Peanut guy", but I think I was "all right" to eneough to feel safe and protected in my business.

I hate seeing people living on the streets….I don’t want to get into politics or into who’s fault that shit can happen….I just know it can be the shits when that’s where you’re at.

I felt best with the last guy I talked with on my way back to my car. He has some serious medical issues, and to be honest, I don’t see much help out of his situation…only what the governemt will pay to keep him alive (and that’s not much)… but in that situation you’ll do everything you can to survive…even if it means living on the street to be near doctors who have the ability to help….I could go on…I also gave him some cash that I know he so seriously could use. When I left he told me he’d been in San Fran for 8 months now and that meeting me was the best thing that’s happened to him since he’s been there.

At the least I think we both felt better and wiser when we parted. I hope he gets lucky.

No matter where I go in life, I never want to loose touch with who I was once in San Francisco years ago….it taught me a lot. I’ve been lucky and if I can help spread any luck to those in need I want to do what is right. That has been my big question lately…heck, I guess that’s everyone’s big thought "What am I here for?"….I might not know the answer, but I do believe that the answer lies in doing what is good and right.

On a side note, I also  feel guilty about the Delorean I’ll be able to drive in a few weeks. I’ve already decided that I’ll drive it for a few years then donate it to charity (or money from an auction). It’s my "toy", but I’d probably feel even better if my toy could help a charity one day.

Peace.
