SES NYC 2006 - It’s all about networking.

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

Greetings from SES NYC 2006.

Wow! It’s 12:59 am, and I’m back at the room, feeling….well…..feeling pretty good!.

This morning I listened to Barry Diller’s keynote, and after his talk, I got my picture with him.

Tonight was the Ask.com party and Wow!……I had some great chats with Lee Odden of toprankings, Pierre from SubmitExpress.com, Brett from Webmasterworld, Neuron, the BOTW guys, Rand of SEOMoz, DaveN, Trueman from Infosearch, Bruce Clay, Dave Carbery from Advertising.com, Chris Boggs, WertyTony Spencer, Jenn, ShoeMoney, my other managers at webuildpages, and several more I’m forgetting in my current state.

Online chatting is great….but in person….I tell ya, can be some much more personal.

Last night I met Kim Krause, and saw Mike Grehan, Greg Boser, Oilman, Rand, Christine Churchill, Matt Cutts, and had some nice chats with Aaron and several others as well.

If you’re an internet marketing geek like I am, this is one kick ass place to be right now. Today was great.

I’ve got some great pictures, but my computer can’t read my camers, so I’ll have all those in a few days when I get back.

Question: Affiliate Program for selling a pdf?

Friday, February 24th, 2006

I have a client who sells 1 pdf on his site (it’s his only product).

He has an affiliate program where we’re also an affiliate (and there’s only a few affiliates).

His affiliate program is through clickbank, but we’re not happy with the reporting that clickbank gives.

What affiliate program would you recommend for being able to track good stats from your affiliate effort if you were only selling a pdf?

FYI, our commission is set at 50% of the sale of the pdf.

Question: 2 URL’s - Same Content - best methods?

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

So I’ve got a client with pretty good rankings at blablabla.com

They’ve decided to change the company name "Great Bla" and have just bought (in a private sale) greatbla.com. For 3 years that site had read "under construction" and now they want the content at the older blablabla.com site on there.

I’m thinking that what I want is called "domain masking"?? where if someone types in greatbla.com then it shows them the content of blablabla.com  but the address bar still reads greatbla.com

Is that what I want? is that the best way to do this? How would I do this?

(thanking Nick ahead of time ;)

Google TV - Google Current.

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

Just got my Google Friends newsletter and in it was the following paragraph:

Google Current
Current TV is a new cable and satellite channel available throughout
the U.S. Through a partnership, we provide access to Google Zeitgeist
information - up to the minute aggregated search query results -
for the Current staff to use in creating new TV stories. The resulting
program, "Google Current," airs every half hour on Current TV and
provides a look at what the world is searching for on Google. From
hybrid cars to human-animal hybrids, from Paris riots to Paris Hilton
photos, your searches guide Current stories.

Cool. I hadn’t seen this before.

Is this Google’s response to CNN? Can Google win/compete in the offline media battle? Look out Barry Diller?

Private SEO Clubs - It’s a Secret.

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

Tonight I got an email from a fellow SEO asking me if I knew anything about this Secret SEO Forum. You can’t see, or do anything unless you’re a member, and you can only become a member with an invite from an existing member.  (one of these members I know reads my blog ;) )

I’ve seen this site a few times from looking at my log referals, but since I’m not a member, I can’t see what’s being said. Things like this seem "cool" in that there’s not many "publicly known" yet "private" SEO groups out there.

I know of another private group called "Webmasters in the Sun" that holds some pretty wild meetings from what I’ve heard, and again, the only way to get invited to their gatherings is to be invited by an existing member.

Are there other clubs you know of? Are you a member of a secret or private SEO club? Do you wish you were?

SES NYC and Conference Tips.

Saturday, February 18th, 2006

Let’s meet at SES NYC - and Conference Tips.

So in a week I’ll be in NYC for the SES conference. I don’t think I’ll be attending too many sessions, so if you’re into meeting up, I’m free most days, and each night you can find me at these parties. Send me an email (my first name at We Build Pages .com) and I’ll shoot you over my cell phone #.  Call me when you’re free, and we’ll get together for a chat.

Here’s some tips I’ve picked up over the past 5 years from attending over 25 SEO conferences.

Beforehand:
Write down questions you’d like answered, or goals you’d like to accomplish.
Give you cell phone number to those you want to meet with before you head out.

Meet as many people as you can:
Introduce yourself to everyone you can, keep moving, keep networking, and if you see someone alone, speak to them. Don’t wait for them to walk up to you, take the initiative. Even if you’re normally shy, do it anyway - this person might be able to answer all your questions and could become your biggest ally - you never know.

Try to give info freely - the more you give, the more you’re apt to get back in return.
Don’t be paranoid about your "trade secrets".

Not all attendees are there to "do business". Don’t push your business on people, and don’t focus on selling. Make friends, and things will move from there.

A few Opening lines:
What Industry are you in?
Is this your first SES conference?
Did you learn anything new today?
Have you been to NY before?
Where are you from?
What do you do?

Avoid your co-workers.  I too often see people from the same company chatting in circles with each other. A circle of chatting people from the same company to me doesn’t seem to be an open invitation to join that chat. I’d rather chat 1 on 1 rather than me and 5 people from the same company…and why should I try to to even chat with a group of 5 people chatting in a circle?

Todd and I usually go to most of the conferences together, yet we hardly see each other during the conference time…and that’s the way it should be, we can compare notes afterwards, and I can chat with Todd any day - at conferences, we split up.

Take lots of business cards. When you take a business card, put a small note on it to remember why you took it.
Give lots of business cards (bring at least 100 of your own cards), put a note on it before you give your card away to help them (jot a note before handing to them , ie, "get links", or "provides SEO services", or "does affiliate work" etc.)

Take lots of notes.
Carry a pen and paper around with you at all times…even at the parties.

Late into the night people will be hanging at the bars, and at the parties (read the party list).
Buy people drinks. This is a great way to get tips from people you respect, buy them a beer and ask them some questions.

Pace yourself - this is a 4 day conference, which means 5 nights for most of us. If you party hard night 1, the next few nights might be recovery time. Nurse your drinks! Think about "tomorrow". Know what time the first session  in the morning which you plan to attend, and know how important that earliest session is to you, so when you’re partying the prior night you can decide when you’re going to bed (based on the fun your having, vs the early session topic).

Misc tips.
Bring your camera and take pictures (see Jim’s conference pics).
Don’t tell Matt Cutts any of your websites!
Though it’s usually not the cheapest hotel in town, I’ve found it’s worth it to stay at the hotel where the conference is being held.
Book your hotel room early.
If you had to miss a session, or want to compare notes, see Search Engine RoundTable Coverage.
Have at least one nice meal out with friends.
Bring an empty backpack in your suitcase to fill with swag from the exhibit hall.
Have Fun

Are you going?
What tips would you offer?

Help - Can a subdomain be on different Host?

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

Help - can you host subdomains on a different servers than your main domain?

I’ve got a client whom is getting a blog and a forum added to his website (wordpress and phpbb).

Problem is, the current site is designed by another company whom has a content management program in place, and that is the only way to update the site (no control panel, no direct FTP access).

I thought there was some kind of technique where I could host the blog and the forum on another site (another host), and be able to have them be subdomains on the other site.

For example:
blog.website.com
forum.website.com

Where the subdomain of "blog" and "forum" are hosted at another site.
Anyone know how to do this trick?
